Bázakerettye: The Cradle of Petroleum Industry in The Heart of Göcsej

Bázakerettye is located north-west from Nagykanizsa in a valley surrounded by beautiful forests. Its thermal spa with warm and cold water basins offers a great time for recreation far from popular tourist destinations. There are several pathways across the forests leading to the small lakes of the countryside, you can go by foot or also by bike. Both lakes of Maróc and Kistolmács are rich in fish and wonderful places for families. Those interested in botanical specialties can visit the Budafa Arboretum to see beautiful, rare pinewoods or the ancient beech forest in Vétyem, with native tree methuselahs. The longest narrow gauge railway run across the village with scheduled rounds. Bázakerettye is the craddle of the Hungarian petroleum and natural gas industry. The first oil-well was established here in 1937, followed by several others for the comfort and prosperity of both the country and the local population. The Petroleum Industry Museum serves as a memorial of the heroic past in the former industrial park.

Arboretum in Budafa

The arboretum is 3,5 km away from Bázakerettye, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Zala hills and beech forests of Göcsej. In the center of the 48 acres arboretum is there a small shooting lodge from 1926 with a beautiful park. In the arboretum there are 220 different kind of pinewoods, dedicious woods and bushes from North-America, Asia and Northern-Europe. The best place to take a relaxing walk or to have a picnic at one of the well-maintained resting places.

Thermal Bath

The thermal bath in Bázakerettye awaits its guests with seasonal opening hours. It has two basins with warm water, bubble bath, and a swimming pool. The spa has a maximum capacity of 2000 visitors. There are several refreshments rooms and bars in its area, and you can rent deckchairs or parasols in a program office. The swimming pool is 33x15 m long with strung water surface and a water endorsing device. Its depth is between 1,63-2,05 m.

 Petroleum Industry Museum

This nice small museum commemorates the birthplace of the domestic petroleum industry. Pictures on the wall show the battle of the one-time heros, you can see their former tools and the celebrities who visited the place in the golden age. In the containers there are original documents about the life of miners, while small mock-ups, models and special industrial instruments demonstrate the secrets of this hard profession.

Narrow Gauge Railway

The whole settlement is crossed by the longest small gauge railway of Transdanubia. Tourists, families and  school groups often take this amusing means of transport, which runs on schedule on the route of Kistolmács,Bázakerettye,Páka,Csömödér and Lenti. In autumn and in winter the carriages are topped and heated. Private trains can be rented on request with diesel or steam engine.

Lakes of Maróc and Kistolmács

There are two beautiful fishing lakes in the neighbourhood of Bázakerettye. Both lakes are well-known among anglers and families.  People often go there for a picnic. Anglers are there during the whole year except the close season.Popular summer resorts.
