Our Halimba
Roaming in the Bakony Mountains, discovering its hidden beauties;
Halimba, the Garden of Herbs.
Why is it worth to visit Halimba? The village is a popular destination for excursions in the southern part of the Bakony Mountains, famous for its herbs. The settlement is known as the home of the cleric Miklós Szalai, who was an expert of local herbs as well as as a place of bauxite mining. There are two fishing lakes in the village, and a leisure park in the nearby Malom Valley and a natue reserve area of moor. The area is easy to reach by foot, by bike or also by horse riding. Halimba is one of the centers of excursions discovering the geological beauties of Hungary. You can collect fossils, visit a mine in operation or an exhibition about the history of local bauxite mining or the mangane dross strata with competent guides. You can make jewels from semi-precious stones. If this is too much for one day, there is also a guest house for visitors.
House of Herbs – Herb Excursions
There is the Miklós Szalai Memorial House and Collection of Local History, Open-Air Ethnography Museum and Educational Garden. The local dean- parson was famous for his knowledge of the healing potency of herbs. He collected 400 herbs of different types growing in the neighbourhood.Based on his observations and written notes, he made tea infusions from the dehydrated leaves and blossoms, and used them to heal different illnesses. His healing activity was renowned in the region, and also Halimba become famous for his teas. Now his house is owned by the local government and there’s an exhibition in the building. You can learn the method of tea-making inside, and find the herbs out in the garden. There are seasonal herb exhibitions and it is also possible to by plants upon pervious registration. There are regular botanical trips in Halimba to discover the local flora.

Jewels from Semi-precious Stones
During the geoligical trips near Halimba, it is easy to discover minerals special or semi-precious stones. Visitors can create their own jewels from the stones in a workshop of the Silver Fir Guest House. The region is rich in minerals.Those who are interested in minerals can visit a gravel mine, a bauxite or a basalt mine. Apart from bauxite and basalt, there is also manganese ore and brown coal in the neighbourhood. It is possible to make your own adventure plan with the help of the guest house staff.
