Nógrád county (seat: Salgótarján) belongs to North Hungary. It is also known as the land of the Palocs. It is a hilly area.It has natural borders with Slovakia, neighbouring counties are Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén on the east, Heves on the south-east and Pest on the south-west. Four mountains meet in its territory: Mátra Mountains from the east, Börzsöny from the west, Karancs-Medves from the north and there are also the hills of Cserhát. The mountains are usually between 600-800 m high, the villages are mainly in the valleys. Popular sights of the area are the castle in Szirák, the shrine of Virgin Mary in Mátraverebély-Szentkút, the mine museum in Salgótarján, Hollókő, the village also regarded as a cultural legacy and found in the World Heritage List, Ipolytarnóc with its volcanic fossils, the Paloc Museum in Balassagyarmat, the memorial place of Imre Madács, a famous Hungarian writer in Csesztve, and an other memorial of Kálmán Mikszáth, a popular Paloc writer in Horpács.
