The Past, Present and Future of our Winery

The volcanic region of Badacsony and its basalt giant emerges from the beautiful landscape. Having witnessed the birth of the valley, the surrounding mountains: the Gulács, Tóti, Csobánc, Bács and the Szent György wrap around the region like a wreath.Borbély család

In addition to our respect and love for wine, the Badacsony landscape guided us to our profession. My wife and I both worked at the Badacsony State Farm, I as a winemaker and later bottler manager, and my wife in the laboratory. While we were working there, we started to replant our old family vineyard as a hobby. By the time the first crop was ready for harvest, we had established our 300-hectoliter gantry cellar on the periphery of Badacsonytomaj. We built a comfortable and cozy Guest House for eight to ten people on the top of the cellar, which provides relaxation to our visitors. Leaving the test tubes behind, Gabriella started to take up marketing and catering. We invested most of our profits in the first years to buying more land, cultivation, and in winery improvements. It became more difficult to juggle our work at the State Farm with our new family business; so in 1996 we decided to stand on our own feet with the expanded vineyard and we established the

BORBÉLY FAMILY WINECELLAR

Our business is a family owned and operated business, from the cultivation to the sales; we execute everything with our own hands.

The first vintage that we bottled was the 1996 vintage, and only a few bottles remain. Expanding the vineyard and augmenting the varieties has been essential to our family. And today we cultivate an 18-hectare vineyard.

Borbély GyulaOur grapes are located on the Badacsony vineyard's sunlit slopes. The names of these hills are Badacsony, Gulács, Csobánc, Bács and Tóti. Grapes are also located on the Somló vineyard in Somlóvásárhely. These hills produce the Olasz Rizling, Rajnai Rizling, Chardonnay, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris), Muscat Ottonel, Somlói Juhfark, and the rare Kéknyelű and Zeus varieties.

We aspire to produce high quality wine. At our artisan winery, we value quality instead of quantity production, and want to harvest healthy grapes with high must content.

The quality of our wines is regularly recognized by strong results at wine competitions.

We insist on maintaining the tradition of ageing in gantry barrels, so that we can pour unique flavors into our wine bottles. You will discover a ripe, fruity grape nose and aroma, and mineral notes from the terroir's volcanic soil. Since 1999 we have bottled with a semi-automatic bottler machine that has a capacity of a thousand bottles.

We have joined to the Association of Open Cellars, are establishing members of the Badacsony Vineyard Wine Road Association, and the Badacsony Tourism Association. We see the future in the development and expansion of quality wine tourism.

Our family believes in the future of the winery. Our son studied at the Horticultural and Food Science Faculty of Corvinus University in Budapest and our daughter would like to study tourism and catering after she finishes high school.

We spent many long nights thinking about our logo and the different colored bottle labels represent the many varieties of our wines.

It is our belief that personal contact is absolutely necessary to develop our customers' trust, so we are looking forward to welcoming wine lovers with a glass of wine.
